Athena: The Origin

To most people I may appear to be a regular 21 year old geek spending my holidays cooped up in my mother's apartment. What you might not know is that I am the desk-bound remote assistant, brand manager, confidant and (most importantly) the son of Earth's mightiest saviour: Athena, goddess of wisdom!

I still remember the fateful night of my mother's ascension to Olympus. It was two years ago, during my freshman year, when my mother (back then still a mortal like us), was driving me to college. We suddenly saw an object in free fall from the sky. Before we could react, the object fell right in front of our vehicle with a thunderous crash. Thankfully, Mom was able to instantly swerve and hit the breaks to avoid an imminent collision.

We got out of the car immediately and the sight we saw next was beyond our wildest dream. Embedded within the huge hole that was created in the ground was a woman dressed in white robe who appeared to be around 7 feet tall and built like tank. She was remarkably still, sitting up and breathing despite what seemed like a fall from well past the Earth's atmosphere (although she still seemed badly injured). That is when she gazed at us with her mysterious glowing white eyes. Sparks of electricity flew from them. My Mom and I nervously exchanged glances, but could not say a word.

After a few seconds, my mother ran towards the woman to aid her. Mom said, 'Who... Who are you? Shall I call an ambulance?'

The woman looked at her and immediately gripped my mother's forearm, speaking with a loud, clear, and echoed voice: 'I am Athena: Goddess of Wisdom and daughter of Zeus. It is too late to save me, mortal. Hades has betrayed the Gods and struck me down with a dagger in my back.'

It wasn't until she mentioned the dagger that we even noticed the blade going through her heart. She was bleeding out fast. That's also right around the time when I realized she hadn't even opened her mouth to speak. She was somehow communicating with us telepathically!

The mysterious woman's face saddened as she continued. 'A war is coming to Earth, and I have failed to protect my children. I have done so for 14,000 years, but today I have failed. Your kind are like insects next to Hades.' She tightened the grip on my mother's forearm. 'You shall be my successor and and take my place in Olympus. For when a deity dies, another must rise from the ashes.'

My mother gave me a frightened look, but was unable to speak a word before Athena shouted towards the sky. 'Hear me Father! Grant this mortal my powers, so that she may fight for justice alongside the gods as one of them in my place. Hear me, almighty Zeus!'

That's when the unthinkable happened. A bolt of lightning hit the spot where my mother and Athena were and everything went white. I heard my mother scream in agony for a couple of seconds.

As I opened my eyes, my jaws dropped at what I saw.

Athena had disappeared, but my mother was levitating a good 4 feet off the ground. In place of the once petite 5'6' woman in her mid 40s was the new goddess: almost 7 feet in height, packed with muscles all over her body, and towering over me... but it was still the same, unmistakably caring face of my mother. Her t-shirt and denim jeans had magically vanished, now in their place was a sleeveless white robe covering her powerful chest. Her arms appeared colossal and rock hard, sporting only muscle and veins everywhere. Her robe also exposed her now well developed and chiselled six-pack abs. They appeared to be so perfect that it was almost as if they were part of a sculpture made of stone. Her white mini-skirt failed to hide her new tree-trunk thighs. Then she opened her eyes. Her once blue eyes were now replaced by the same mesmerizingly white eyes that Athena had, sparks and all.

She gave me one of her famously goofy grins and telepathically communicated with me for the first time. 'How about I fly you to college instead, mortal?'

I have to admit I was still shocked at this point, and having her land right in front me only further highlighted the drastic changes she'd just undergone. I eventually managed to force out a whispered reply.

'Mom... Mom is that you?'

She laughed telepathically. Then, the sparks in her eyes suddenly intensified as she let out an electrical blast, completely destroying her little hatchback. Continuing her telepathic conversation, she joked: 'So much power. I feel so much power inside of me. I am a god now! Can you believe it Clyde? The ancient Greeks used to worship my kind 11,000 years ago. We ruled over mortals like you!'

I started walking backwards, away from her as I my nervousness turned to pure fear. My Mom quickly realized that her joke had scared me more than amused.

She finally opened her mouth so that she could talk to me with the same comforting voice I had been so used to hearing. 'I'm sorry honey. I didn't meant to scare you. I'm just feeling really overwhelmed right now. My mind is being fed all the wisdom of Athena.'

I paused.

She switched back to her telepathic communication. 'You know what, how about you help mommy test and document her new powers? I will fly you to college when night falls. I promise.'

And that is how my mother, formerly Emily Kent, became the Greek goddess Athena. She is now capable of basically anything from flying at speeds faster than the sound to creating powerful electrical blasts from her eyes, from being bullet-proof to reading people's minds or lifting a tank over her head with either her amazing strength or telekinesis.

I made her promise to never read my mind and look for my internet history, to which she smiled and agreed.

It turns out that one of the only powers my Mom doesn't seem to possess is the ability to undo her transformation and revert back to her mortal body, so she has to constantly manipulate other people's minds into thinking she is the same old, petite, middle-aged woman she once was and hide her alter-ego.

This allowed her to continue living in her apartment. Only I could see her as the muscle-bound goddess that she had become. Her electrifying white eyes were still a mystery to me though.

With the wisdom of Athena and the strength of a god, I didn't like how she sometimes belittled 'my' kind by calling us insects or mortals. But deep inside I know it's still the same person I've always known.

On the downside, she would soon have to go away to Mount Olympus and spend decades there preparing to fight out the great war. That said, she promised to always keep a watch over me and to come back every now and then to visit.

For now though, she leads a life as the world's strongest superhero and I am lucky enough to be her mortal sidekick.
