A Complete Amazon Experience

The city of Themiscyra has had a long and grand history. It was the central city of the Isle of the Amazons, the fearsome warrior women of ancient Greece. It had been the site of many attempted conquests and many great victories. Once it was considered a safe haven for women everywhere, a place where they could come and be safe, from the world of men. Nowadays it is a major Tourist attraction for men and women alike. How had the once great city taken such a fall from grace is one of the great stories of the world.

The most defining feature of the city is its wall. It still stands to this day, having been built to last, from stone and magic. The wall can reach up to 50 meters high in some places and 25 meters at its lowest, it was nigh impenetrable. The great walls had survived sieges, Earthquakes and even the Tsunami created by the eruption of Santorini (which sank Atlantis). There was only one entrance into the city. The Great Gate. A giant archway, open to all, with no Door or Barrier of any kind. It would seem like a mighty oversight to have impenetrable walls and yet an open doorway that anyone can walk through. That was however, the idea. The Gate (much like the walls) were cursed with magic, any woman that passed through would be turned into an Amazon, The next generation of warrior. Any man however, would be turned into a plain and simple woman, an ironic slave to the city and servant of the gods.

All women from the Aegean sea were welcome in Themiscyra. Over time they came in their hundreds, seeking a life of paradise, free from the persecution of men. The life they would find however was not what they were expecting. When they entered the city they were turned into Amazons. 8-foot tall women bristling with muscles. As soon as they arrived, they were drafted into the Amazon army and trained in combat for the next 10 years. It seemed that they would need to earn their lifetime in Paradise and the military service would leave many of these women disillusioned in the island. And yet, the façade remained and as the classical era slowly came to an end, the number of women that came to seek refuge only rose.

The walls would be tested many times over the next 2000 years. Walled cities could still fall, as Troy and Constantinople had proved. The first force to test the strength of the walls in this new age came from the west. Rome. As the Roman Empire grew, the number of attempts to take Themiscyra grew with it. And all would fail. The walls were impenetrable and even if a catapult shot, arced over the wall and entered the city, the Amazons were safe in the network of tunnels and bunkers beneath. They would wait until the perfect moment and then strike when the enemy was at their weakest. The next big invader would come from the east with the Ottoman Empire, but even they failed. Invader after invader came and went leaving behind only bodies and slaves. Napoleon would later give it a shot and his cannons did damage the walls of Themiscyra. But the magic did not die and soon Napoleons armies were crushed like so many before them. All these victories, left the Amazons feeling invincible, the world could change around them and they would remain unaffected by it. But cracks were beginning to show and it would soon be over for them.

The Amazons had remained ignorant of the changing world. When the first Cannons appeared to take the city, they were shocked at first, but then lost that feeling when they failed to breach the Walls. Even worse they had refused to remain secret, they were known to the world over. They would not listen to the stories of the women coming in from the new world and laughed their tales off as fanciful and legends. The influx of women arriving at Themiscyra had grown, near exponentially, but now they would also bring their families with them. The gate was still turning men into women and so mothers would often watch their sons be transformed simply because of their gender and not their actions. What’s more the serving time within the army until these arrivals could become citizens had been constantly raised until now they would be forced to serve for 100 years (Amazons had long life expectancies of over 1000, Demigods like Hippolyta and Calypso were virtually immortal). The Amazon army was very near to forming a coup by the time the 20th century rolled along and when Rome reared its ugly head to invade again, things would change.

In October 1940, Italy invaded Greece and in order to prove to its allies that Italy was a strong military nation, they would do the impossible and conquer the Amazons with the modern Italian army. It was yet another failure. The Italian tanks did not cut the mustard and the efforts of their air-force and navy did little. But the time their army surrendered to the Amazons, the Amazon sense of invincibility was stronger than ever, or at least it was with the pampered royals and citizens. The army was mostly made up of women that knew better. They knew that their armour and swords were no match for Twentieth Century technology, but their superiors did not listen and they sustained heavy casualties fighting the Italians. But as Italy failed to conquer the whole of Greece they made a call for help and by Spring 1941 the Amazons were facing a new threat. Nazi Germany at the height of its Military Power. Where the Italians had failed, Germany did not. Its Luftwaffe pounded the city night and day, Incendiary bombs set Themiscyra ablaze in a fire storm that had been previously unheard of. Concentrated bombing would bring down a section of the wall within three days of the invasion. The magic here was not the same at the Gate (Which the Germans entirely avoided) and did not transform anybody. Panzer tanks stormed the city, destroyed the Amazon army and took the city within hours. Themiscyra of the Amazon isle had fallen for the first time in 3000 years. The Nazis true to their name carried out many atrocities on the island, It was inevitable. They also experimented with the magic of the Gate in order to create Amazon warriors of the SS, but these experiments eventually fell through. By the time Themiscyra was liberated in 1944 the population had dropped from over 50,000 people to just under 10,000. It was the first time during the liberation that many classical Amazons had met or even heard of an American, so behind the times they were. In a postwar era the future of the island was uncertain. The demigod rulers Calypso, Hippolyta, Diana and Circe were dead. Killed during the invasion when their palace was bombed. They had no leadership and it seemed that the days of Paradise were over. Greece helped to rebuild it’s island nation and as the world got smaller, eventually Themiscyra embraced a new life: tourism.

The walls and temples have since been repaired and now in the 21st century, despite the collapse of the Greek economy, Themiscyra is thriving. The island is a top tourist destination for all across the world. Cruise ships park in the brand new Harbor and let off thousands of tourists a day. But there is one problem. The Gate. Magic is fickle and can not be just turned off because you want to start a tourist business. The main Gate is still the only entrance into the city and although it happens rarely, occasionally the Magic will turn back on and ruin every-bodies day. But then again the brochure does promise 'a complete Amazon experience,' doesn’t it?
